Reading and Interpreting Literatur

The review provides evidence of the students' ability to read and interpret research reports, focusing on reported findings, but recognizing the impact of methodology. There is also evidence of critical thinking in interpreting conclusions drawn by the various authors.

The wording of the paper suggests confusion or lack of understanding of information gleaned from the various sources. It is apparent that the student is unable to read and interpret reports of research.
Fair

Various studies are referenced in the review but it is difficult to determine if those references point to findings and conclusions of the reported studies or other sections of the articles reviewed. Findings may be mis-interpreted. There is not clear evidence that the student has skill in reading and interpreting published reports of research.
Good

Considerable emphasis is placed on reporting methodology of the various research reports. Findings and conclusions of the various authors are given secondary consideration and there is little critical consideration of the reports reviewed. The paper calls into question the students' ability to read and interpret research reports.
Excellent

The review focuses on findings and conclusions reported by the various authors but critically interprets those findings and conclusions in light of methodology, other literature, and personal experience. The paper provides convincing evidence that the student has skill in reading and interpreting research reports.
Synthesis of Information

The student synthesizes information from the various sources pointing out meaningful relationships that expand understanding of the topic.

Poor

The student presents a series of summaries with little or not attempt to establish meaningful relationship among them.
Fair

A central argument is presented and data from the literature used to sustain that argument.
Little or no "new thinking" on the topic is evident.
Good

Information from various sources is presented. One or two "big ideas" are related to one another while others are overlooked. There is a sense of using the literature to support an existing argument rather that combining ideas to create new or deeper understanding.
Excellent

The student relates and combines data from the various sources, pointing out new and meaningful relationships that contribute to a deeper understanding of the topic.
Conclusions
15 pts

Given the data from the various sources reviewed, the student arrives at a conclusion and offers recommendation(s) for improved teaching practice and/or future research.

Poor

There are no conclusions nor recommendations offered.
Fair

Conclusions and recommendations are and counter to data in reported from literature reviewed and/or there is a lack of thoughtful and meaningful application to music teaching or research.
Good

Conclusions grow out of the literature reviewed but the relationship is not consistently clear.
Recommendations do not have clear relationship to the literature reviewed nor to the conclusions drawn. Recommendations may also be impractical reflecting a lack of understanding of music teaching and/or research.
Excellent

Conclusions offered are clearly based on the literature reviewed and lead to thoughtful and meaningful recommendations for changes in teaching practice and/or research.
